LAHORE: PML-N Secretary-General Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has claimed that his party would succeed in getting eight seats in the upcoming Senate elections.
Talking to the media after attending a consultative meeting of the PML-N Parliamentary Board at the Raiwind residence of Mian Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday, Jhagra said that they had so far received over 90 applications from candidates for the Senate elections.
“The Parliamentary Board of the party will meet on Thursday to finalise the list of candidates for the Senate polls,” Jhagra told the media. He was expecting rapid political developments after February 13, the last date for submitting nomination papers for the Senate elections.
He said that the PML-N was in contact with all the political parties, including the PML-Q, for having seat adjustment for the Senate elections. Nevertheless, he made it clear that they would not compromise on their principles for the sake of the Senate elections.
Commenting on the Swat situation, he said the issue could only be resolved through a resolution jointly passed by parliament. Jhagra admitted that the Taliban were dangerous for Pakistan. He claimed that the PML-N believed that the prevailing crisis in the country could be countered through dialogue.
He reiterated the commitment of his party to the lawyers’ long march and stated that the PML-N would provide them with complete support. He said that the party would decide about joining the lawyers’ sit-in after having consultation with the legal fraternity.
About the eligibility case of Mian Nawaz Sharif, he said any decision against the Sharif brothers enjoying support of 160 million people would not go in favour of courts as well.
The parliamentary board meeting was chaired by Mian Nawaz Sharif and attended by Raja Zafar ul Haq, Ch Nisar, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar, Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, Zafar Iqbal Jhagra and Sabir Shah.
