Imran to help end cases against Benazir if she boycotts polls

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan has said if Benazir Bhutto boycotted the elections then he would help end her corruption cases.

Speaking at a function of the Lahore Bar Association at the Aiwan-e-Adal here on Saturday, Imran urged Benazir to join hands with the APDM on this crucial juncture in order to save the country. He said he would come on roads with students, civil society members and lawyers to boost the ongoing movement for the restoration of Constitution and the judiciary.

Imran said the Legal Practitioner and Bar Councils (amended) Act and the curbs on the media were the main hurdles in the way of restoration of the judiciary and Constitution. He said the PCO judges cannot hold free and fair elections. However, only selection can be held. He said he would try as hard as he could to convince Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Benazir Bhutto to support the APDM on one point agenda of restoration of the judiciary to pre-November 3 status. Imran said he would never accept those judges who had taken oath under the PCO and would continue struggle against these unconstitutional judges.

The PTI chief said reinstatement of Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other deposed judges of the Supreme and high courts was critical for the sovereignty of the country. He strongly condemned the role of Attorney General of Pakistan Malik Qayyum, alleging that he (AG) was using his powers in wrong ways. Imran called Qayyum Meer Jaffar and an undesirable person. Praising the lawyers` struggle, he said the nation could never forget the sacrifices of lawyers. LBA President Syed Muhammad Shah, Secretary Shamimur Rehman Malik and other office-bearers also spoke on the occasion.
